Madeline jumped at the sound of the shot but did not feel the burning of the bullet. She opened her eyes. Operations still had the gun trained on her forehead, but it was shaking in front of her face.

“Paul?”

The weapon dropped to the floor with a clatter, and the binds confining her to the chair clanked open. She looked up at him, still in disbelief.

“Paul…”

His face was mournful and angry, and he began to choke back tears as she stood. “I can’t cancel you,” he whispered as he embraced her, “because I can’t live without you.”
