The telephone rang. “Answer that, will you, dear?” Charles asked absently, never taking his eyes off the newspaper.

Madeline picked it up. “Hello?”

“It’s me.”

Paul. Her heart lurched with anxiety. She glanced at her pre-occupied husband. “No, I don’t want to switch long distance carriers.”

“He’s home, isn’t he?”

“Yes.”

He paused. “I have to see you. When can we meet?”

“Twenty-three dollars and thirty cents.”

“Eleven-thirty? Fine. At the park, by the rose garden?”

“Yes, thank you.”

“Good. I love you.” The line went dead.

Charles sighed. “Damn solicitors never get the hint, do they?”

She smiled weakly.
