His voice was hollow when he spoke. “Why?”

She didn’t look at him, keeping her face turned toward the wall and her arms folded across her chest. He put a hand on her shoulder; she shrugged him away.

“Why can’t you tell me you love me?”

“Promises like that are difficult to keep in Section. Things change so quickly…”

“My feelings for you have never–and will never–change.”

“I know. I’m sorry.” She lowered her head. “You’d better go.”

He paused, whispering, “I love you, Madeline,” before slipping out of the room, the dangerous phrase echoing in the darkness.
