Duty Bound: Act II

Duty Bound

Synopsis: Madeline must determine whether or not an operative is working with Red Cell by using “any means necessary.”

ACT II

FADE IN

INT. MADELINE’S OFFICE – DAY

MADELINE is misting a bouquet of irises on her metallic stand. OPERATIONS enters. She doesn’t look up.

OPERATIONS

Michael’s back from Somalia.

MADELINE

I saw that on my monitor. His mission was successful.
One hundred percent containment. He and his team should
be commended.

OPERATIONS

Very well.

(pauses, smiles)

What are your plans for this evening?

MADELINE

Boyd and I are reviewing McMillan’s known locations over
the past year.

OPERATIONS raises his eyebrows.

OPERATIONS

Boyd?

MADELINE looks at him blankly.

MADELINE

Mr. Scott.

OPERATIONS sits on the edge of her desk casually. He looks at his hands.

OPERATIONS

(quietly)

I miss you.

MADELINE

(distracted)

Hmm?

MADELINE turns to face him, leaving her atomizer on the stand.

OPERATIONS

I haven’t seen you for the past week.

MADELINE

The McMillan case has taken up all of my time.

OPERATIONS

On the contrary. Mr. Scott has taken up all of your time.

MADELINE

I beg your pardon?

OPERATIONS

(stands)

This is the first time I’ve been alone with you since he
arrived.

MADELINE

Because I’m working with him on the case.

OPERATIONS

At your insistence.

(pauses)

Did I do something wrong?

MADELINE

Why would you think that?

OPERATIONS

The day before he arrived, things were different between
us.

OPERATIONS touches her cheek, but she doesn’t move.

OPERATIONS

(continues softly)

What happened?

MADELINE

It was just…bad timing. I’m sorry.

OPERATIONS lowers his hand. They hold a look, and he exits. MADELINE touches her cheek where his hand had been, a sad expression on her face.

DISSOLVE TO:

INT. COMMON AREA – EVENING

Establishing shot. There is little activity in the common area. The Perch windows are dark.

CUT TO:

INT. THE PERCH – EVENING

OPERATIONS sits on the ledge, lost in his thoughts. He does not hear DAVENPORT enter.

DAVENPORT

You wanted to see me, sir?

OPERATIONS turns, startled. He quickly recovers and holds up a trench coat.

OPERATIONS

This belongs to Boyd Scott.

DAVENPORT

What are you doing with his coat?

OPERATIONS

(smug)

He left it at this morning’s briefing. I’d like you to return
it to him.

DAVENPORT takes the coat and exits. As OPERATIONS gazes out the windows, we…

CUT TO:

INT. MADELINE’S OFFICE – EVENING

MADELINE is seated on one side of the desk, looking through a stack of documents. SCOTT is sitting opposite her. DAVENPORT enters.

DAVENPORT

You left your coat at the briefing this morning.

SCOTT

(surprised)

There it is! Thank you.

DAVENPORT nods and exits. MADELINE frowns slightly.

MADELINE

You didn’t wear your coat to the briefing this morning, did you?

SCOTT

I didn’t think so, but evidently I did.

SCOTT and MADELINE continue to study the papers on her desk. SCOTT occasionally glances up at her. She isn’t paying attention.

SCOTT

(cont.)

One of our operatives came here for a mission once and suggested
I eat at this little place downtown. What do you say we put our work
on hold and have a little fun?

MADELINE regards him with mock-suspicion.

SCOTT

(laughs)

Don’t worry, I’ll be the perfect gentleman…if you want.

MADELINE

(smiles slightly)

All right.

SCOTT

Great.

They stand up and gather their belongings. SCOTT slides on his coat. Camera closes in on his neck as he adjusts the collar. A small round device has been attached in the fold.

DISSOLVE TO:

INT. THE PERCH – EVENING

Camera is fixed on a speaker which is sitting on the ledge.

SCOTT (v.o.)

–Italian, I think. Do you like pasta?

MADELINE (v.o.)

Of course.

Angle OPERATIONS; he has been listening to the entire conversation.

CUT TO:

EXT. DOWNTOWN – NIGHT

SCOTT and MADELINE leave the restaurant arm in arm, laughing lightly. They walk down the street quietly, looking at each other every few moments and smiling.

SCOTT

So what now? Any places you can show me?

MADELINE

How about my apartment? It’s private…quiet…has a beautiful
view of a rose garden.

SCOTT stops walking, and a grin appears on his face. He puts his arms around her waist.

SCOTT

I thought I was supposed to make all the moves.

MADELINE

That’s incredibly cliché.

SCOTT

Maybe so but…let me make a few, okay?

He tilts his head and kisses her gently on the lips. When he pulls away, she smiles.

SCOTT

(cont.)

Lead the way.

CUT TO:

INT. MADELINE’S APARTMENT – NIGHT

The front door opens, and MADELINE and SCOTT enter her apartment. She flips a switch, and the room comes to life. Her living space is lavishly furnished and decorated with paintings and plants. She obviously spares no expense when it comes to her home. MADELINE lays her coat over the recliner, and SCOTT does the same, looking around curiously.

SCOTT

Well, I was half right.

MADELINE

What do you mean?

SCOTT

Well, I figured your apartment would be either bare or extravagant.

MADELINE

Does it meet your approval?

He pulls her to him and kisses her.

SCOTT

Yes, it does.

(pauses)

We should have some wine. Do you have any?

MADELINE

On top of the refrigerator. The corkscrew is in the top drawer
to the left of the stove. Glasses are in the cabinet to the right
of the sink.

Grinning, SCOTT turns toward the kitchen to retrieve the necessary items.

SCOTT

Why don’t you put on some music?

MADELINE

All right.

MADELINE goes to the stereo and scans her CD collection thoughtfully. SCOTT glances over his shoulder and sees that she is occupied. He pours wine into each of the flutes. He looks at MADELINE again. Certain that she isn’t looking, he pulls a small eyedropper from his pant pocket and squeezes a few drops of the clear liquid into one glass. He takes both glasses and carries them into the living room, where MADELINE has finally decided on a CD and presses play. Slow R&B music floats from the speakers. (continuous music: “Softly Softly” by Sweetback)

SCOTT

Here you go.

He hands her the glass of tainted wine, then clinks his flask against hers. They both take a drink. He smiles at her.

SCOTT

(cont.)

So what changed your mind?

MADELINE

About what?

SCOTT

When I first arrived, you didn’t want to have anything to do
with me. Now we’re having wine in your apartment?

MADELINE

Like I told you before…

She puts both of their glasses on the coffee table and brings his face closer to hers.

MADELINE

(cont.)

Business before pleasure.

They kiss, and SCOTT slowly lowers her to the couch. Camera pans to their coats, still on the back of the recliner. Scene DISSOLVES to the speaker in the Perch. Aside from the music, rustling and kissing can be heard. There is no question as to what is going on. Angle OPERATIONS; he looks incredibly hurt. A soft moan from MADELINE comes through the speaker, and OPERATIONS closes his eyes in pain.

SINGER

(through speaker)

Oh baby, why you wanna just hurt me like you do?

OPERATIONS turns off the speaker. Everything is silent. Off his pained expression, we…

DISSOLVE TO:

INT. MADELINE’S APARTMENT – NIGHT

Camera shows several pieces of clothing strung across the floor. Angle MADELINE; she is laying on her side in bed, her hands folded under her head. She is naked, but blankets are tucked under her arms, covering her breasts. The expression on her face is distant and a bit sad. She covers her mouth as she yawns. SCOTT’S head appears from behind her, and he kisses her bare shoulder.

SCOTT

Are you all right?

MADELINE

(quietly)

Just a little tired.

SCOTT

Listen, there’s something I want to tell you.

MADELINE rolls onto her back to look at him. She is about to speak but stops, frowning and squinting slightly. She tilts her head and blinks. She looks confused. She tries to sit up but falls back, like she has been hit with a dizzy spell. SCOTT grins broadly.

SCOTT

(cont.)

That’s it, darling. Just fall asleep…

Her eyes widen, and she obviously knows something is wrong and that he is responsible. However, she can’t keep her eyes open, and she passes out. Smirking, SCOTT kisses her lips softly and sits up. He slides on his pants and walks into the living room. Reaching into his coat, he grabs his cell phone and dials a number.

SCOTT

(into phone)

I have her. Where do we meet?

Off SCOTT’S smug expression, we…

FADE OUT
